deviantTHUMBS:HUGE v7 by rotane deviantTHUMBS:HUGE v7 by rotane
deviantTHUMBS:HUGE – A style that makes the new huge thumbnails less schizophrenic

FEATURES:

This Style tries to make the new huge thumbnails appear less "schizophrenic": It removes the light background on all thumbs, fixes the cut-offs on panorama-thumbs (see second screenshot above), and tweaks a few tiny things (Verdana instead of Trebuchet, hover effects, margins and paddings, and the like).

NOTES:

This style might interfere somewhat with custom Gallery skins, since it changes the deviation title and links.

RELEASE HISTORY:
  • v0.1 (August 25, 2012): Initial release of the new huge thumbnails.
  • v0.2 (August 26, 2012): Lit thumb fixes; min-width for smaller thumbs.
  • v0.3 (August 31, 2012): dA just updated the new huge thumbs (that light background is even lighter; but more importantly: panorama thumbs are fixed), so this update takes this into account. Also: nicer "More Like This" links on thumbs.
  • v0.3-1 (September 1, 2012): Fix for deviations in Storage.
  • v0.4 (September 7, 2012): Bugfix for recent code-update.
  • v0.4-1 (September 7, 2012): Bugfix for small thumbs.
  • v0.4-2 (September 12, 2012): Bugfix for panorama thumbs. (This is getting tiresome, dA!)
  • v0.4-3 (September 14, 2012): More Like This updates; portrait thumbs cosmetics.
  • v0.4-4 (September 17, 2012): In Storage thumb fix; Gallery/Collection thumb fixes.
  • v0.5 (October 29, 2012): Fix for group galleries' "more" link; fix for journal/news/lit thumbs again.
  • v0.5-1 (November 8, 2012): Small fix for extra wide (but not pano) thumbs.
  • v0.6 (May 17, 2013): Better way of dealing with shadow-overflow of book-ends. (Which means: better compatibility with Gallery CSS.)
  • v0.6-1 (June 24, 2014): Removed Mozilla-specific values.

Attention: use either this style OR deviantTHUMBS:TINY OR deviantTHUMBS:GRID!

at first it worked for me then it turned out really weird, all the pictures have this really annoying shadow around the edges that's huge.....is there any way I can go back to the big thumbnails?

I don't know what the issue is (a screenshot perhaps?); but if you want to disable it, you can go to the Add-ons Manager (I'm guessing you're using Firefox), selecting User Styles, and then disabling or deleting the Style.

I think I fixed it, thanks! It must have been something I did because it works fine now :)

When I went from PM to normal membership it changed back to the old ugly style, but it says the style is still enabled. Any way to fix this?

I'm not quite sure what you mean… The new huge thumbs are not optional anymore (they have been in Beta Test from April to August); now everyone, PM or not, has them.

No, I mean, I installed this style a few weeks ago because of the new thumbs (and I happened to have PM that was about to run out). My PM run out a few days ago and the style seem to have disappeared with it, even though it says it's enabled.

I don't think having a PM has any effect on that. You could always manually remove the style and re-install it again.

Yessss, light backgrounds be gone! They were especially terrible on deviations with supposedly transparent backgrounds.

Very nice. Why did they give them light backgrounds any way???

Well, I can only guess, but I think to make each thumb equally tall, as means to make them all appear more conected to each other, and the rows of thumbs appear less erratic. A good idea in theory, but their execution just didn not work at all.

Agreed. And it really ruins a lot of gallery skins. With all the layers of CSS on there, it is not a simple fix for many. I think they need an option for users to choose which gallery style to show so their skins work.

Great stuff, is there any chance you might add support for Safari at some point? These little grey bits drive me insane! :lmao:

I have never tried optimizing a style for Safari. (I don't have an up-to-date Mac.) It's using the same engine as Chrome though (webkit) so it should be working already. But tell me more, maybe I can help. :)

Oh, well, when I went to the page, it said I needed to install stylish to firefox for it to work, I don't know how to attempt to install it in Safari, is there a particular file or something I should be using? *not experienced in using scripts*

Oh, I never knew Safari was this unsupported! Anyway, I found something: It seems to be a one-man-show, but maybe it's working: [link]

Ok thanks :aww: I installed stylish and it's enabled, but when I get the script page, I'm not sure how to access the part you've made, it only has one large blue button and it still says I need firefox and stylish? Is there another way to download your part of the script? Or am I looking at the wrong part of the page to install it XD

Well, you can just try to click the "Show code" button further below and copy&paste the lot. Then there should be some way to paste it as a new blank style into Stylish somewhere…

Ah thanks, I found that and added the code, the only thing is, it asks me for a drop down option of applies to: Url, url prefix, etc and there's a list, and a box to specify, I tried a few with the deviantart address in the box but perhaps I'm not getting it all just right for it to work :B

Ah that sucks, I wish I could help more… I bet it's got something to do with this line "@-moz-document domain("deviantart.com")" that it wants modified.

Love it!

I like the bigger thumbs but those boxes have always driven be bonkers. Plus this also tightens things up and gives me an extra column of thumbs in grid view. It looks so much better than the dA version. :happybounce:

Thanks!

Personally, I kinda lean towards the bigger thumbs, too. Especially when you compare them to the small ones side-by-side, the small ones look really tiny. And I've said it since the new thumbs were on beta: dA has to do something about these tiny thumbs, in order to stay competitive with other art sites. But maybe they overdid it a little and made the big ones a bit too big. :P Hell, I might write yet another script and make mid-sized thumbs :plotting:

=O I hope you do go through with this and make mid-sized thumbs. The large ones are too big and the tiny ones are too small... medium would be just right.

You're my hero either way, but it would make my day to see that happen. XD

=3 Thank you for considering it. And thank you again for the styles you've already made. I am just... so glad that someone did something about the thumbnails, since deviantArt doesn't seem to be willing to really listen to us.

I'm sure you have seen my Grid View skin? That's about a middle sized one, albeit a bit differently styled. I will hold off on making a 4th skin for now, as dA seems to still be in the process of tweaking the thumbs.

Yeah well, at least we can take matters into our own hands with handy tools such as Stylish ;)

I've seen the grid view one, yeah, but it seems to cut things off in the previews so I'm not that inclined to use it. =3 I'll just use the tiny one, I think, until they tweak theirs to a point that's acceptable to me.

XD ...which might mean I'll have tiny thumbs for the rest of forever, but I don't think I mind that much.

some one give this man a medal, hes managed to make the thumbs actually look good. (why hasn't DA done these things any ways? thought the point of beta testing was to get feedback on improvement, somthign we did plenty of when these first turned up in may)

im hoping they will do as you have, but until then. this script will be perfect.

Thanks man! I don't know, I kept repeating myself over and over while this was in beta. But no-one bothered to reply. No-one but fellow deviants who were also unhappy, of course. I think the way beta-testing works these days is merely this: to find bugs of the features they're going to shove on us, but not take any note of an actual suggestion. I hope in this case they will end up doing it though – better late than never – since this time around there is really something wrong with the new feature, and not merely an outcry against change.

yeah, i'm hoping that they eventually start taking community feed back. DA's got the history of making changes according to community feed back so hears to hoping that it holds true. (unlike YouTube...)

Fantastic work

I've been working on a Stylish that shrinks them back down to 150px wide (and removes that lighter background and other things), but I see you did a lot of the work already here. My only issue is getting film thumbs to show up and work right with scrolling the frames. That's gonna take a while to get right.

Oh I've got a 150px version done as well. :P The film strips are indeed a pain, but at least they're not breaking the grid and do indeed scroll – somewhat…
