NOTE: deviantART has just released a new thumbs grid, so this style currently is not working!
deviantTHUMBS:GRID – A style that changes the overal appearance of thumbs, to counter the new huge thumbs. Inspired by fav.me/d5brhp7 by EmilioEx
ATTENTION:
This skin crops thumbs on all sides! It's only a little bit, but just so you know…
NOTES:
- Grid View recommended. Works in Wall View as well of course, but just doesn't look as nice.
- Film deviation thumbs are still a bit borked. Won't break the grid though.
RELEASE HISTORY:
- v0.1 (August 26, 2012): Initial release of the new huge thumbnails.
- v0.2 (August 26, 2012): Lit thumb fixes.
- v0.3 (September 1, 2012): Fix for deviations in Storage.
- v0.4 (September 7, 2012): Bugfix for updated dA-code.

Even though you said this script stopped working with the 2016 thumbnail update, it was still working for me last week. I don't know if a Firefox or dA update was responsible for finally killing it for me, but I'm really sad that it did. 
(Edit: I see in a previous comment you said this was still working in galleries as of last year, which was true. But now it's not working in galleries either, which is what I was referring to.)
